Cross Country Skiings equivalent of a city fun run. The mass start race has something for everyone with skiers from the novice to international elite althlete in attendance. The race is based on the world Loppet citizen format and is named after the fall muster of sheep which has taken place on the farm for over eight decades. Participation is the focus and everyone recieves a medal or annual pin on completion of the race.

The race is timed to complement the Kangaroo Hoppet, one of the World Loppet races.  Competitors have the opportunity to therefore complete two international citizen races and include New Zealand on their air ticket at little extra cost.

The Merino Muster caters for team competition for the short 7km race.  It celebrates a great High Country tradition of mustering the sheep down to lower levels in autumn, an event that features in much of our South Island literature and song and formed a right of passage for many of the rural communities young people.

New in 2008 was the Mini Merino Race for the 4-8 year olds. Participation is the key with goodies given to all those that give it a go.

The location of the race was once itself a sheep station in Central Otago, the district in which Wanaka is situated, is the heart of merino sheep country.
