Mountain Biking

Snow Farm has over 50kms of trails which in Summer, are used for mountain biking.
The trails lead down to the Meg River, up towards the Pisa Range or you can chose to stay close to the lodge.
Ride for an hour, half a day or a whole day, the choice is yours!

There are also numerous farm tracks that can be used both across the top of the mountain and up & down to the valley floor.
Either way, the mountain biking at Snow Farm is second to none!

Trails to suit all abilities.

Trails rides

Meadow Hut (also read the Loop )
The aim is to go to the Valley floor looking directly to east from the Lodge.(straight ahead)
Leave at the south end of the Snow Farm Lodge (when looking at the lodge the right hand end), go 30 m approx  down on to main street turn a hard right  left. 20 m approx and then left. There are four trails in front of you.Take the third from the top as it is more direct - second will be fine as well-after 200m approx turn right to the bottom of the valley, at the bottom it is really important take the right hand (outside trail) as the inside trail is boggy and this will lead you  to the hut. Continue along this trail until the junction that goes the River Run and Meg Hut. Straight ahead at this junction and to the river and Musterers flat then follow the river to the Meadow Hut.
NB: there are many drainage ditches so please look out for these. The long grass obscures them. If there is water running across the tracks check it out and try to divert it.
Driving requires permission and we have a fee per car going to the hut.
Respect the Proving Ground Land. If you do end up on any of the flats never bike or drive up the middle- along the fences helps the grasses grow and prevents damage.
From the Hut go North and follow the signs back to the Lodge. Via the Loop

The Loop
At the South End of the lodge (the end the road comes in on) take the trail leading to the valley below with the sign Meadow Hut. At the first junction –JCT 15 follow the River Run, Meadow Hut. If you decide to go the opposite direction–left up the trail 100m you will come to JCT 12 so read the instructions the opposite way. These are the lower two trails.

After Musterers flat, you pass the big rock corner and wind on to the hut. Then through the River Valley to the hut. From the hut go north and stay on the River Run Loop trail. When you see the sign Bob Lee Hut (easiest route the second Bob Lee Hut Sign– you can walk up to the hut and relax on the veranda. Make sure that you connect back into the Loop and follow the signs return to base. Stay on the Loop track. When you reach JCT 12 there are a variety of trails that will take you back to the lodge.

If you decide to visit the DOC estate you can add 10 km on to your trip or be adventurous and go to the top of Pisa. Turn off to the east on your right to the Kirsty Burn or Top Beat. Both trails will take you to the Kirsty Burn Hut – a shelter hut and from there you can walk/bike to the top of Pisa. From the hut the road to the north leads to the top of the mountain.

Hanging Valley
South from the lodge. Stunning views of the Meg River from the ridges above the valley. Main Street south on to the Hanging Valley trail. After 2 km overlook Musterers Flat - then south above the river – the trail winds 4 kms to overlook the historic Meg Hut area. A seat is constructed at the South end of the trail. The trail forks take the right trail signed Hanging Valley. After 3 kms return either by Test track 10 or by the Hanging Valley. Hanging Valley you repeat the first 1 km or take the D9 Express. To enter the D9 express you turn right at the 2006 and Hanging Valley junction into Hanging Valley (not 2006) and then left at the bottom of the hill 20m into D9. This brings you back to Main Street.

For the fit biker - head up on to the DOC estate up the Kirtle Burn and down Top beat or even go to the top of Pisa for the stunning views of Cromwell.
